Kugy and her childhood friend, Noni, were reunited once again. They were both enrolled in the same university in Bandung and were about to start the exciting college journey. Noni’s boyfriend, Eko, was also reunited with his cousin from Amsterdam, Keenan. Four of them instantly clicked and became close. Kugy called their group of friendship as The Ninja Wanna-Be’s. …
Kugy and her childhood friend, Noni, were reunited once again. They were both enrolled in the same university in Bandung and were about to start the exciting college journey. Noni’s boyfriend, Eko, was also reunited with his cousin from Amsterdam, Keenan. Four of them instantly clicked and became close. Kugy called their group of friendship as The Ninja Wanna-Be’s.
The Ninja Wanna-Be’s started to crack when Noni brought a new person to the picture, Wanda. Noni believed Keenan, with his incredible painting talents, would be a perfect match for Wanda, whose family owned a prestigious gallery in Jakarta. Noni never knew Kugy and Keenan secretly fell in love with each other. Kugy, who loved to write children’s story found an ideal partner figure in Keenan who loved to paint and they both shared their artistic passions. Yet she didn’t have the heart to betray nor leave her highschool boyfriend, Joshua.
Eventually Kugy withdrew herself from The Ninja Wanna-Be’s, by keeping herself busy by doing social work. She volunteered to teach poor children in rural area of Bandung. Her students, especially a boy named Pilik, inspired her to write. She wrote for them a children story titled The Adventure of General Pilik and The Alit Troop.
Meanwhile, Wanda did everything she could to win Keenan’s heart. In return, Keenan gave his complete trust to Wanda and rebel against his father’s will, Adri, who was never supportive on his son’s passion for painting. But Wanda’s dishonest maneuver drove Keenan away even further, causing him to lose his confidence and gave up painting altogether. Kugy was disappointed at him. When they met and argued, Kugy left her story book by accident. Keenan kept it.
In desperation, Keenan decided to go to Ubud, Bali. He found shelter in Wayan’s house, an old friend of his mother, Lena. Once a wounded painter himself, Wayan tried to heal Keenan’s broken spirit. Wayan’s niece, Luhde, also gave Keenan her wholehearted support. Inspired by Kugy’s story book, Keenan found his love back in painting. At the same time, he grew close to Luhde.
Graduated from college, Kugy worked in an advertising company called AdVocado, owned by a young man, Remigius Aditya. Remi paid extra attention on Kugy and her quirky ideas. As Kugy’s career accelerated faster than anybody’s expectation, Remi and Kugy also grew closer beyond mere friendship up to a point where Remi had to put his professionalism at stake and declared his love for Kugy.
The engagement of Noni and Eko reunited Kugy and Keenan. As a gratitude for inspiring him back to his painting passion, Keenan took Kugy for a journey to see Pilik. The little boy was no longer to be seen. Pilik had died, his house was destroyed due to some real estate development. Devastated by Pilik’s death, Kugy and Keenan intended to make something out of it. They planned to write a book together, cherising the memory of Pilik by continuing the story of General Pilik and The Alit Troop. Kugy would write the storyline and Keenan would paint the illustrations.
Their plan seemed sound until they realized it was impossible to deny their feelings for each other. Both didn’t want to betray their current partners. At the end, the truth revealed itself in an unexpected way. Not only for Kugy and Keenan, but also Wayan also had his chance to make peace with his past.

After Noni (Sylvia Fully) and Eko’s (Fauzan Smith) engagement party, the reunion between Keenan (Adipati Dolken) and Kugy (Maudy Ayunda) led to a short, fun trip. But their happiness turned to sudden grief when they found out Pilik had died and Pilik’s parents lost their house to a real estate developer.
Kugy dan Keenan made a vow to create a children’s book on behalf of Pilik. Kugy continued her Pilik story while Keenan took part in making the illustrations.
Because of her book project, Kugy lost her focus at work and Siska (Sharena Gunawan) then used that to attack Remi’s professional ethic. Remi decided to let Kugy go as his employee. But it didn’t stop him from loving her more.
In Bali, Remi gave Kugy a ring as a sign of his commitment. At the same time, Kugy found out the connection between Remi and Keenan. She realized the woman she met earlier that day in Ubud was Luhde (Elyzia Mulachela), Keenan’s girlfriend. The truth was too big for her to chew. Kugy was at shock.
Kugy ran to her brother’s house, Karel (Ben Kasyafani). After Kugy’s disapperance, Keenan started to connect the dots. He found Kugy and they finally had their moment of truth. Although both knew their true feelings for each other, they decided to stay as friends and not hurting their partners.
One by one, bigger truth started to reveal, including the love triangle that once entangled Wayan (Tio Pakusadewo), Keenan’s mother, Lena (Ira Wibowo), and Keenan’s father, Adri (Agus Melaz).
After recovering from his stroke, Adri started to see the sacrifice Keenan had made for the family. Touched by Keenan’s love, Adri finally gave his blessing for Keenan to purse his dream of becoming a painter. Keenan found his freedom.
Kugy released her last paper boat in the open sea. It was a letter where she told Neptune, her imaginary pen friend, about the man her heart finally chose.

The first hit single, Perahu Kertas, was sung by Maudy Ayunda, the leading actress. While Andhika Triyadi, the film scorer, also did the music production of most songs in the album, including ones written by Dee: Tahu Diri (Minding Myself) performed by Maudy Ayunda, A New World performed by Nadya Fatira, Langit Amat Indah (The Beautiful Sky) sung by Rida Sita Dewi, and Dua Manusia (Two People) performed by Dendy.
Three other songs were contributed by other composers: Cinta Yang Tak Mungkin (The Impossible Love) by Andi Rianto and Daniel Hartono, performed by Elyzia Mulachela; How Could You a hit single from a rising indie band The Triangle; and Behind The Star from a singer-songwriter Adrian Martadinata.
OST Perahu Kertas received Piala Maya 2012 for Most Favorite Original Soundtrack. The album was also nominated in AMI Award 2013 for Best Original Soundtrack Production and in Indonesian Movie Awards 2013 for Most Favorite Original Soundtrack. For his work in Perahu Kertas movie, Andhika Triyadi won The Best Film Scoring in Festival Film Bandung 2013.
