I ran a query on the ip address of the pc that had the installation during the attempted activation. The query showed that ISA allows the https connection that the activation needs but on the pc it says it cant contact Adobe for activation. Outgoing https (port 443) traffic is allowed on our ISA 2004 firewall.

The cause of the activation or connection error is Adobe has “retired” their older activation servers. It was these servers that Photoshop CS3 were connecting to every time I started the program (ie to check that the serial code is legit). What this means is that older Adobe software such as CS3 and Acrobat 8 can no longer be activated. Any other progams e.g. Games, security software, Itunes will not detect a internet connection. Adobe Acrobat downloads its updates and when going to install says not internet connection. Basically the last time i tried to install a windows update in Dec 2010 IE stopped working so i never installed any again and there are currently 103 important.
